Rustam Khalfin is rightfully considered one of the most significant figures in the art of Central Asia of the XX century. He worked in painting, and photography and became one of the first to engage in performance, installation, and video art. He had a great influence on the regional art community and developed the concept of the aesthetics of nomads in the modernist perception. In 1999, he opened his LOOK gallery.
His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery (Russia), Zimmerly Museum of Nonconformist Art in New Jersey (USA), the MuHKA Museum of Modern Art (Belgium), and the A. Kasteev State Museum of Art in Almaty, the National Museum of Kazakhstan in Nur-Sultan, as well as other museums and private collections.
